Roseville Kicks Off New Session of Tech Teens Leadership Academy

The city of Roseville will be launching the fourth session of the Tech Teens Leadership Academy, a hands-on program exposing high school students in the region to real-world technology, project management and business operations.

The Tech Teens Leadership Academy is a fun, hands-on program exposing high school students in the Roseville region to real-world technology, project management and business operations. Since its launch in 2014, there have been four sessions with over 80 graduating students.

“We are trying to mold future leaders of information technology,” said Hong Sae, the city of Roseville’s chief information officer. “Students with very little access to resources, mentorship and training will gain the opportunity to learn from the very best at the city.”

Information technology at the city goes beyond desktops and email. The students learn about information systems while visiting onsite locations such as the CSI lab at the Police Department, a 911 dispatch center, a Fire Department training center, the city’s radio towers and mobile command/SWAT centers.

“Science, technology, engineering, math, business and leadership skill sets are critical subjects for our future leaders. This program encourages students to become innovative thinkers and problem solvers. The goal is to help students beyond the classroom and to prepare for our future,” said Chris Hardy, Tech Teens program manager.

Students have gone on to place at prestigious colleges including Cal Poly, Berkeley and Stanford. One of the many ways we have measured the success in the program is by gauging our alumni and their willingness to help with the program after graduating. We have been fortunate enough to have many students return and volunteer to lead past and future programs.

The fourth session of Tech Teens Leadership Academy starts today, Jan. 18. The goal is to grow the program beyond the city of Roseville, and we would like to assist other leaders with creating similar programs. The chance to come together and create programs that benefit our future is an opportunity that should not be overlooked.
