California CIO Top 5 Priorities (Infographic)

A quick look at what California's CIO expects to focus on during 2017 and 2018.

It should come as no surprise that cybersecurity is the No. 1 priority for California's CIO, according to an annual survey of the states.

After all, during the past year, California has embarked on numerous initiatives designed to bolster the state government's cybersecurity posture and readiness.

"Information security will be effectuated in a 'one team, one fight' approach. Cybersecurity will be a foundational element to every technology initiative the state embarks upon, and the measure by which the secure delivery of government technology services are provided to the people of California," State CIO Amy Tong and Deputy State CIO Chris Cruz wrote in a piece on Techwire in late 2016.

The California Department of Technology is standing up its own Security Operations Center and is gathering data on security audits of state departments, among several projects. The state's new chief information security officer (CISO) is Peter Liebert.

California self-reported the five priorities presented in this infographic to the annual Digital States Survey from the Center for Digital Government.

1. Cybersecurity (1st-ranked nationally)
2. Governance (9th)
3. Disaster Recovery/Continuity of Operations; Open Government/Transparency/Open Data (8th and 10th)
4. Hire and Retain Competent IT Personnel (5th)
5. Cloud Computing (3rd)
