Amy Tong, deputy director of the Office of Systems Integration and agency information officer of the California Health and Human Services Agency, will serve as acting state CIO and director of the Department of Technology.
State CIO Carlos Ramos announced Wednesday that he will retire from public service at the end of March.
"I want to thank him for his years of dedicated service to the people of California, and in particular, for his time as Director of the Department of Technology and as the State’s CIO," Government Operations Agency Secretary Marybel Batjer wrote to Department of Technology staff.
Tong has worked in California state government for more than 20 years in positions of increasing responsibility. She was appointed deputy director of the Office of Systems Integration in July 2014 and previously was named the California State Lottery’s deputy director of information technology services — its CIO — in December 2012.
Prior to joining the State Lottery, Tong was the chief technology officer for the State Board of Equalization. She also has served as the assistant division chief of technology and support division as well as chief of the data center at CalPERS and worked in technology at the State Water Resources Control Board.
Ramos was appointed state CIO by Gov. Jerry Brown in June 2011, replacing Teri Takai.
"Mr. Ramos told us this morning of his plans to retire at the end of the month. We thank him for his service and wish him all the best,” Deborah Hoffman, deputy press secretary in the Office of the Governor, said Wednesday.
Batjer said an "extensive" search will be done for a new state CIO.
