Ron Robinette, CIO of the California Community Services and Development Department, is starting a new role today with the Department of Technology (CDT). His position will be dedicated to IT project oversight leadership of the Project Approval Lifecycle function for the Office of Statewide Project Delivery.

Robinette had been the CIO of California’s Department of Community Services and Development since May 2014. Robinette was a first-time CIO, something he has talked about during several leadership forums in Sacramento.

"I felt really prepared, which is thanks to my mentors along the way. I have had excellent role models in the IT field, so I felt prepared to step in to my current role. Also, the experience of completing the IT Leadership Academy in June 2013 has definitely helped in many ways," Robinette said in a 2014 interview with Techwire.

He previously served in the application development branch of the California Department of Public Health, where he worked on a number of key projects including the Health Information Exchange Gateway. Prior to that, he served as a senior project analyst for the state Water Resources Control Board. In all, Robinette has worked for the state for more than 16 years. Robinette has a degree from Sacramento State University in Business, Management Information Systems.

At CDT, Robinette will report directly to Tamara Armstrong, acting director of the Office of Statewide Project Delivery.

Last fall, a system replacement underway at the Department of Fair Employment and Housing became the first IT project statewide to complete the California Department of Technology's revamped approval process, called the Project Approval Lifecycle (PAL). Fair Employment and Housing recently started work on the requirements validation for a new case management system, after moving through the four-step PAL that the Department of Technology formally introduced in mid-2015.
