Sacramento County has released its five-year Technology Improvement Plan, which consists of about $55 million in spending spread over multiple projects. Most of the projects are modernizing systems that have been in place for as long as three decades, like the jail system which still runs on COBOL code. Other projects, like the public radio upgrades, are designed to improve interoperability with other entities.

The property tax system and voting system replacement are both discussed in the plan, but they have not been budgeted for. If funding sources are identified, the projects can start in 2017-2018.

The budget development and criminal justice system will be entering the Request for Proposals (RFP) phase soon. The cashiering/recording system and radio system will soon have vendors, and the VoIP project will begin its upgrades in 2017-2018.

County CIO Rami Zakaria discussed these projects and other initiatives during a Techwire Industry Briefing last month in Sacramento.

Here's an infographic we made summarizing the main points in the county's Technology Improvement Plan.
