Bike Share System Could Pedal into Sacramento-Davis Corridor

The system would initially operate in Sacramento, West Sacramento and Davis, according to an RFI released Sept. 29. The system might also serve Sacramento City College, California State University, Sacramento, and UC Davis.

The Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) recently released an RFI for a regional bike share system.

The system would initially operate in Sacramento, West Sacramento and Davis, according to the document released Sept. 29. The system might also serve Sacramento City College, California State University, Sacramento, and UC Davis.

Bike share systems typically need docking technology, smartphone applications and payment systems; some use smart bike technology, open data and near‐field communication (NFC).

If the project moves forward, an RFP could be coming in spring 2016.

According to KCRA, the backers told the Sacramento City Council in May that the bike share program would have more than 600 bicycles at 78 rental stations. Users could purchase a day pass or annual pass. SACOG said the project has received $4.8 million to buy the bikes and infrastructure.

The Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District also is involved in the initial concept for a bike share program. SACOG represents city and county governments in the six-county Sacramento region.
