Public-sector GIS projects in California were recognized with a Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) award from Esri during the company’s annual user conference in San Diego last week.

The California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), city of Los Angeles, Long Beach Transit, Riverside County and the Santa Clara Police Department were among 187 organizations honored worldwide for “vision, leadership, hard work and innovation in their use of Esri’s geographic information system (GIS) technology.”

Cal OES was recognized for collaborating with the ArcGIS community to bring disaster response data to the Cal OES Common Operational Picture, beginning with the 2014 Napa earthquake and summer wildfires, and the ongoing drought.

The city of Los Angeles was honored for using GIS to automate route generation and field data collection for garbage trucks.
