Sacramento Unveils Recycling Wizard Web App

The city of Sacramento has launched a Web-based application to help residents determine how to recycle or dispose of specific items or materials. The searchable “waste wizard” contains information about household hazardous waste, construction materials and other categories.

The city of Sacramento has launched a Web-based application to help residents determine how to recycle or dispose of specific items or materials. The searchable Waste Wizard contains information about household hazardous waste, construction materials and other categories.

For example, for a search of antifreeze, the wizard says it’s household hazardous waste and can be taken to three local facilities for disposal, free of charge. For a search of “plastic cups,” the app says they can be put in a blue curbside recycling container and that set-out time for the bin is 6 a.m. on the resident’s assigned collection day.

“Our customers are knowledgeable recyclers,” said Terrance Davis, the city’s integrated waste manager, in a statement. “The types of recyclables accepted has grown over the years, and it is tough to know what is and isn’t suitable for the blue curbside container. The Waste Wizard can answer questions on whether or not you should rinse the peanut butter jar before recycling, or if a pizza box is accepted.” (The answers are yes — a light rinse  and yes, if there is not a lot of food residue or grease covering the bottom.)
