State Energy Authority Mulls Additional Tax Exemptions for Tesla

If approved, the state would contribute $20 million in exemptions for Tesla’s $1.1 billion in property expansions taking place at the company’s Fremont, Palo Alto, Hawthorne and Lathrop manufacturing facilities.

The California Alternative Energy and Advanced Transportation Financing Authority is considering additional sales tax exemptions for Tesla Motors.

If approved, the state would contribute $20 million in exemptions for Tesla’s $1.1 billion in property expansions taking place at the company’s Fremont, Palo Alto, Hawthorne and Lathrop manufacturing facilities. The authority will meet today to discuss the staff recommendation.

The authority last month waived $47.2 million in sales taxes for Tesla, which has received around $120 million in exemptions to date as a result of the state’s tax breaks for green technology manufacturers. The company is requesting a total of $98.4 million.

Tesla employs 6,000 people at its Fremont facilities and plans to hire 3,200 more, according to a report from Fresno Bee. The tax exemption on necessary equipment to produce Tesla’s Model 3 has assisted the company in bringing in the additional workers. According to Electrek, Tesla plans to produce the Model 3, which is considered to be one of the manufacturer’s more affordable vehicles, at a rate of over 400,000 per year.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk last month also announced via Twitter that his company has “pieces in place” to begin rolling out Supercharger V3 stations. Last year, Tesla released the second generation of its charging stations, which offer a power output of 135-145 kW. The report from Electrek states that the V3 technology will likely offer output greater than 350 kW.

@FredericLambert There are some installed already, but full rollout really needs Supercharger V3 and Powerpack V2, plus SolarCity. Pieces now in place. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) December 24, 2016
The California Alternative Energy and Advanced Transportation Financing Authority will meet today at 10:30 a.m. in the Capitol Mall. They are also scheduled to discuss tax exclusions for North Fork Community Power based out of Madera and Atara Biotherapeutics in Ventura.
