With 2014 coming to a close, Techwire is counting down its Top 25 news stories of the year. Check back each day through Dec. 31 as we look back at the people, projects and events that made news during the year gone by.

Story #7: Ron Hughes, the chief deputy director of operations for the California Department of Technology, retired from state government. In an interview with Techwire in early July, Hughes said he waited to retire until the launch of CalCloud — the state’s new private cloud service — and the development of a new policy for how agencies should contract for Software as a Service and public cloud offerings. In 2012, Hughes became director of OTech, which provides networking, computing and training services through fees paid by state agencies. Hughes said he is proud that OTech has lowered its costs each year and put the office on a path to long-term sustainability. Before joining OTech, Hughes was president of the California Data Center Design Group from 2002 to 2012. He said he intended to resume consulting on a part-time basis.
