3rd Annual Open DataFest Expands with Regional Bay Area Event

The first-ever Bay Area Regional Open DataFest will be held in Palo Alto this weekend at the Li Ka-Shing Center at Stanford University. Stewards of Change Institute in partnership with the California Health & Human Services Agency are hosting the event. Next month the event will return to Sacramento for California HHS Open DataFest III.

For the third consecutive year, California public health leaders will come together in March at the Sacramento Convention Center for the annual Open DataFest — but this year, they’re also taking the show on the road.

The first-ever Bay Area Regional Open DataFest will be held in Palo Alto this weekend at the Li Ka-Shing Center at Stanford University. Stewards of Change Institute — in partnership with the California Health & Human Services Agency — will host the event along with the Stanford School of Medicine Center for Population Health Sciences. Next month the event will return to Sacramento for California HHS Open DataFest III.

The event celebrates the achievements of the past year while also opening up data and applications to the attendees, with the hope that collaboration, creativity and ideas will grow.

According to the group’s recent press release, “At the Bay Area Regional Open DataFest event, we will explore the intersection of open data and academic research and how these two perspectives can come together to drive innovation in public health,” adding that its goals were to highlight Bay Area Open Data initiatives and local work, share academic and leadership perspectives on open data and examine opportunities for adoption and collaboration within the area, among others.

“The findings, recommendations, and outcomes from this session will be reprised at the statewide Open DataFest III event in Sacramento, March 14-15, 2016,” said the release. “The Sacramento event will showcase innovative solutions, new knowledge, and practical applications from across the state and offer recommendations to shape the state’s open data vision, including the changes needed and how to achieve them over the next several years.”

In Sacramento, attendees will hear about how open data is making a real difference tracking vaccines in Nigeria, how local governments use open data to drive innovation and engagement, and how the state of California has drastically changed its process for delivering open data sets to the public.
