The California Department of Human Resources is encouraging IT professionals working in state government to complete an online survey due Jan. 27 that could help create new job classifications and update existing ones.

The IT Classification Consolidation/Update Project has convened a team of more than a hundred subject matter experts and state executives to consider how job classifications can be revised. CalHR and the Department of Technology are leading the effort, along with other stakeholders. One of CalHR’s strategic goals is to consolidate job classifications across state government.

CalHR says the project’s intent is to make the job classification system easier to understand, more flexible, and more reflective of the IT shops employees are working in.

“The more survey responses CalHR receives the better able CalHR will be to establish a new classification structure that accurately reflects the work, levels and needs of department IT shops. The survey data will assist CalHR in deciding how to create a structure that can allow incumbents to expand their information technology work portfolio through simplified movement across multiple information technology domains of work and/or transition from one domain to another without changing classifications. Respondents may also help CalHR simplify movement within the IT career path so that movement will require fewer examinations and certification lists,” an online FAQ for the project says.

The core project team has identified six domains of IT work and the associated major responsibilities: Client Services, Business Technology Management, Information Security Engineering, IT Project Management, Software Engineering, and System Engineering.

CalHR is asking IT professionals to complete one of three surveys, depending on the specific agency, department or office they work for. “This survey is intended for professionals working in an information technology office/environment and is not limited to information technology classifications,” CalHR says.
