Deputy Director at California's Office of Technology to Retire

Barbara Garrett, deputy director of the Statewide Telecommunications and Network Division for the Office of Technology Services, is retiring at the end of May.

Barbara Garrett, deputy director of the Statewide Telecommunications and Network Division for the Office of Technology Services (OTech), is retiring at the end of May.

Garrett was appointed as deputy director in June 2014; in this role, she oversaw a team at OTech that's responsible for security, application development, desktop support, the help desk, email and network services.

Prior to her appointment, she served as CIO at the Department of Managed Health Care and deputy director of the Office of Technology and Innovation. Garrett has worked for the state of California for more than 30 years, many of which were spent as a network branch manager at the Teale Data Center. She managed the planning and implementation, as well as operations and maintenance, of the Teale network.

Garrett also served in the State Controller’s Office and the Department of Motor Vehicles. She spent time as the vice chairman for the California Association of Information Technology Managers from 2003 to 2005. Garrett also graduated from the IT Leadership Academy.

Ellen Ishimoto, who has served as interim chief of OTech, and Scott MacDonald, the Department of Technology’s CalCloud project director, will fulfill Garrett’s responsibilities upon her departure.
