DMV Website Redesign Focuses on Online Services

The DMV home page is the highest traffic website in California state government, with anywhere from 5.5 million to 6.5 million page views per month.

Visitors to California’s DMV home page might notice a new look and some new features.

On Dec. 30 the Department of Motor Vehicles rolled out the first phase of a website redesign intended to make it easier for customers to find and access the department’s online services, including driver’s license renewals and vehicle title registration.

Done in-house by a half-dozen DMV employees, the improvements include more prominent links, a new rotating banner, new social media buttons, and a new field office locator where customers can enter a city or ZIP code to find the nearest DMV locations.

The changes were done after analyzing the site’s Web analytics. The DMV home page is the highest traffic website in California state government, with anywhere from 5.5 million to 6.5 million page views per month.

The DMV hopes to complete the next phase of its website enhancement project sometime in 2016. The department will be revamping the website with responsive design features that adapt to viewing on a wide range of mobile devices.

The DMV website www.dmv.ca.gov went live in 1996. Online vehicle registration services were introduced in 2000, and the DMV’s online appointment system was established in 2001.
