GitHub to Play Vital Link in State IT Development

The California Department of Technology is bullish on GitHub, the open-source code repository, and sees it helping with IT cost efficiencies in state government.

Last week's release of GitHub Enterprise 2.12 means upgraded project board enhancements, global Web hooks and repository archiving.

Lucky for California, the relatively new Innovation Lab continues to develop its open source codes to improve state advancements, with GitHub as a partner.

“It will be an integral part of future IT project development,” wrote Bryce Brown, spokesman for the California Department of Technology, in an email to Techwire.

Code was recently updated for Child Welfare Digital Services, the state project that oversees the technology used in child welfare case tracking. Many other statewide projects have added code in the last few months, including the California Department of Health and Human Services and the CDT Office of Digital Innovation.

GitHub is a company that offers its services for free to public and open-source projects. It charges a fee to businesses that seek to take advantage of its code-sharing and development resources.

“We chose GitHub as a partner in this effort because it is considered an industry standard among developers worldwide,” Brown added.

GitHub representatives predict that 2018 will see IT advancements worldwide, including security being built into code development, rather than added in protection.

Cloud 1.0 transforming to Cloud 2.0 also means a data movement with services and tools to support it.

“... All companies are data companies, whether they know it or not. In 2018, so long as teams know how to use it, data will become their greatest asset,” says a GitHub blog post.

Brown said California will continue to focus on sharing open source codes in 2018 and create more cost-efficient operations in IT development.
