Gov. Brown Names U.S. Congressman California Attorney General

U.S. Representative Xavier Becerra will serve as California's next attorney general, replacing U.S. Sen.-elect Kamala Harris.

Gov. Jerry Brown announced Thursday morning the appointment of U.S. Representative Xavier Becerra as California’s next attorney general.

Becerra was elected to the U.S. House of Representative in 1992, where he is currently chairman of the House Democratic Caucus and a member of the Committee on Ways and Means.

Prior to his work with federal legislature, he served in the California State Assembly from 1990 to 1992 as a representative for the 59th district in Los Angeles, and as deputy attorney general for the California Office of the Attorney General from 1987 to 1990.

His nomination will be submitted following the official resignation of Attorney General Kamala Harris, who was elected to the U.S. Senate last month.

Harris has been credited with spearheading technology initiatives throughout the state, including the California Cyber Crime Center launched in October and development of Ready for School: Recommendations for the Ed Tech Industry to Protect the Privacy of Student Data released earlier this month.
