The California Lottery is one of the few revenue-generating state agencies. It doesn’t receive taxpayer dollars or any money from the General Fund.
Assembly Bill 142 requires that 84 percent of the total annual revenue is returned to the public in the form of prizes and funding for education. The Lottery’s main priority is giving money for the public education system. According to its website, Lottery players have contributed over $30.9 billion for educational opportunities since 1985.
Of these funds, 80.2 percent go to K-12 public schools, with the remaining 19.8 percent going to community colleges, CSUs, UCs and other education programs.
The Lottery’s IT department is currently using data analytics to achieve its goal of being the largest lottery in the country and gathering more money to put toward public education. Chris Riesen, Lottery CIO, expects the department to reach $8 billion of unaudited revenue by 2018-19.
The Lottery has an open RFP for a vendor to provide communications equipment and low voltage installation, cabling, connectivity and project management services for the district offices. The initial term is one year with two optional extensions of one year each. The proposed start date of the contract is September or October of this year.
