Secretary of State's Office Recruiting for New CIO

The Secretary of State's Office currently is developing and implementing the new VoteCal system — the statewide voter registration database.

The California Secretary of State is advertising for its vacant CIO position. The deadline to apply is Feb. 23.

The CIO reports to Secretary of State Alex Padilla and plans and directs automation, data collection and interpretation, and information technology issues.

The Secretary of State's Office currently is developing and implementing the new VoteCal system — the statewide voter registration database. A total of 46 counties have been deployed on VoteCal to date, as of late last month. The system is expected to be the official system of record for voter registration in California by June 2016.

The secretary of state also is considering alternatives for its Business Connect project, which was canceled in September 2015. Business Connect was conceptually approved in 2011, and as originally conceived the project’s aim was to put all Statement of Interest business filings online and move the Secretary of State’s Office to a paperless records environment, enabling the organization to turn around business filings in a matter of days instead of weeks. The new system aimed to replace and consolidate nearly two dozen existing systems.

Former Secretary of State's Office CIO Chris Maio recently moved to the State Controller Office to take the position of chief of information systems in the Personnel and Payroll Services Division. In his duties, he will serve as director and “oversee the successful deployment of a statewide payroll system and strategies,” the controller’s office said. Maio joined the Secretary of State's Office in 2012.
