State Employees Use Lean 6-Sigma to Improve IT Efficiency

The Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) on Thursday recognized 23 state officials and employees in different agencies and departments for obtaining "green belts" in Lean 6-Sigma training.

The Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) on Thursday recognized 23 state officials and employees in different agencies and departments for obtaining "green belts" in Lean 6-Sigma training.

The participants used the Lean 6-Sigma approach, which uses analytical and statistical tools to help identify and address inefficiencies, to complete projects streamlining business processes within state government.

GO-Biz and the Government Operations Agency have been piloting Lean 6-Sigma since 2014 through a six-month training offering. Several of the projects have had a technology angle. A team at the Department of General Services, for example, analyzed how to make IT contract procurements more efficient, while a Department of Technology group looked at how to streamline provisioning of data center services. Caltrans studied how to reduce the amount of time it takes to initiate a new technology project.

GO-Biz Director Panorea Avdis and other state executives recognized the participants during a ceremony in the Governor’s Council Room on Thursday.

"The GO-Biz Lean 6-Sigma training program uses the best tools from the private sector to help improve the functionality of state government,” said Avdis. “GO-Biz continues to respond to the needs of businesses and here we are making government more efficient and user friendly, which helps improve California’s business climate.”

“The dedication shown by these 23 graduates, who engaged in training to help streamline government processes and improve customer service, showcase the best of what state employees can do,” said Government Operations Agency Secretary Marybel Batjer. “At GovOps, we are taking this model and have created the California Lean Academy which will offer different levels of training to help create a culture of innovation and continuous improvement in state government.”
