Tax and Fee Administration Seeks New CIO

The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration will seek a new chief information officer at the end of September.

The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) will seek a new chief information officer (CIO) at the end of September.

Since leaving her position as chief deputy director of the Board of Equalization in July 2017, Brenda Fleming has reapplied to the position and gone through the hiring process.

The Board of Equalization was stripped of all its non-constitutional duties and staff in July, and Fleming moved to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration to handle those duties.

Fleming was the CIO of the Board of Equalization for five years before her promotion to chief deputy director. She has also served the state of California in several other director positions for 24 years before joining the BOE.

In an interview with Techwire, Fleming said the challenges for the CIO of CDTFA are the same as any other public CIO:

  • Providing cost-effective technology solutions
  • The rapid pace of technology
  • Ease of access for residents
  • Talent recruitment
