Two California Representatives Recognized for Supporting Tech Legislation

The Information Technology Industry Council announced it was honoring two of California’s representatives on Thursday.

The Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) announced it was honoring two of California’s Congressional representatives on Thursday.

ITI is an advocacy group representing tech companies around the world. It named Reps. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and Scott Peters, D-Calif., as two of the four ITI Tech Legislator of the Year recipients.

“Each year ITI bestows the award to recognize four lawmakers, a Republican and Democrat from both the House and Senate, who are selected by ITI member companies for their demonstrated commitment to advancing policies that support innovation and technology,” ITI’s press release read.

Issa was honored because of his support for encryption as a security measure, according to the press release. The group also discussed his work on reforming the skilled immigration system.

Issa sits on the House Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform Committees, where he influences technology policy.

“We’re very pleased to recognize Rep. Issa’s leadership to make our legal immigration system work better for future innovators … and for ensuring the Internet as a platform to spur new innovations that create jobs and supercharge our economy,” ITI President Dean Garfield stated in the press release.

Peters received the award for his work on energy efficiency policies and renewable energy production. ITI also mentioned Peters' work on the immigration system. Procurement streamlining and a permanent research and development tax credit are also contributions Peters has made toward tech legislation.

“It’s imperative that leaders in Washington update our laws to help our innovators and workers compete in this changing economy. From modernizing our cybersecurity and immigration policies, to investing in energy and scientific research, there is more work to be done,” Peters was quoted in the press release.

Senator Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., and Senator Cory Booker, D-N.J., were also recognized.
