Water Board's New CISO Hits Ground Running

A new state government department has a new CISO, and she's hitting the ground running.

Elizabeth Door is the new CISO for the California State Water Resources Control Board, having stepped into her new role late last month.

Door started in IT as a WAN engineer consultant for Tyco International in 2000. After 9/11, she moved onto LAN administration and Systems Administration for smaller companies in an effort to reduce travel requirements. Door then opened her own business in 2003, which focused on e-discovery, data recovery and computer forensics. She divested from her company in 2013, but continued to work as a consultant until she started with the state as a project manager for the California State Lands Commission in 2014.

Since then, Door has also worked as a project manager for the California Department of State Hospitals and the Bureau of Cannabis Control.

“[SWRCB] is a new department, so I’m very excited about getting the program up and running,” Door told Techwire. “There’s a lot of areas we need to address and make sure our posturing is sufficient and in line with the CDT framework.”

Door says she is working on familiarizing herself with the environment and focusing her efforts on developing “an appropriate governance and policy structure aligned with the business goals and objectives of the State Water Resource Control Board, Environmental Protection Agency and the State Information Security Office,” as well as supporting, designing and implementing security architecture and a continuous security awareness program.

“The state has a lot of [security] architecture in place already,” Door said. “We need to leverage what we already have and focus on scalability for the future.”
