John Mann has been appointed to the newly created role of deputy director of legislation at the California Department of Technology, the Brown administration announced Tuesday.

Mann was communications director for State Sen. Tony Mendoza since 2014. He previously served in the same capacity for then-State Sen. Alex Padilla from 2011 to 2014, and Assemblyman Pedro Nava from 2006 to 2010, according to a biography from the governor's office.

Mann was a consultant for the California State Senate Democratic Caucus from 1999 to 2005 and in the Office of California State Sen. Jack O’Connell from 1995 to 1998.

The deputy director of legislation role at the California Department of Technology was created as part of a departmental reorganization that included the creation of an Office of the Directorate. Mann will oversee staff working on legislative, policy and public affairs.
