Department of Education Mulling Legacy System Replacement

A single Web-based system could be on the way for compliance and certification functions around implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

The California Department of Education is considering the replacement of three legacy systems used by the department's Special Education Division, according to state records.

Before engaging a formal procurement, the department wants market feedback, through a Request for Information (RFI), on the availability of a Special Education Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) that would replace the legacy data systems used for compliance and certification functions.

Here's a quick snapshot of the legacy systems:

"The CDE would like to obtain the SMART solution to replace these legacy systems while retaining the current suite of business features. The CDE seeks a solution that will provide a single Web-based portal to access tools, reports, documents and data," the RFI says. Responses are due March 31.

The California Department of Education says the IT systems are used to monitor and review implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Technical elements of the new SMART system could include data center hosting services, and the system will eventually receive data from the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS).
