State Tech Official Discusses Goals, Accomplishments

Her department hopes to continue to reduce its technical debt and improve processes in coming months.

Ellen Ishimoto, deputy chief technology officer in the Office of Technology Services at the California Department of Technology, talked at a recent vendor event about some of her department’s accomplishments. They’re also shown on this PowerPoint slide.

The department, Ishimoto said Nov. 14, recently implemented IT Service Management (ITSM) and customer service tools and continues to look at improving its processes. She said the department is working on communicating better and being more transparent with its customers. This could potentially include sharing dashboards with users.

Cloud migration continues, the deputy CTO said, with a goal of becoming “location agnostic.” A Software-Defined Wide-Area Networking (SD-WAN) pilot was successful, and that effort continues to expand. And the department is also scrutinizing its technical debt.

“We need to ... look at what services we should be providing, what we should be partnering with you to deliver," Ishimoto said. "If you’re coming in to talk to me, you may hear this. So, think about ideas you have, things that we can do to reduce our technical debt.”
