3 Key State Agencies Recruiting for IT Roles

Three highly influential state government departments are recruiting for IT professionals.

The California Department of Technology (CDT) is seeking a Senior Telecommunications Engineer to serve as a Network Automation Architect for CDT’s Office of Technology Services (OTech) and as lead technical automation engineer and subject matter expert. The engineer will be responsible for helping work up strategic plans, goals and objectives and will help develop the network automation architecture road map. The incumbent will also take part in “enterprise-wide collaboration to enable the design, engineering, and implementation of Software Defined Networking (SDN), Software Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN), and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) services; the most complex and critical network infrastructure automation improvements; and supporting hundreds of state organizations and the applications that deliver services to the public.”

The engineer “will understand major aspects of the current public and private cloud and enterprise network architectures, including their functional organization and configuration, as well as operational principles and procedures,” the job posting says. The incumbent will also serve as an adviser to the Infrastructure Services Deputy Director and the Enterprise Network Branch Chief and a technical lead and mentor for Infrastructure Services staff.

In addition, the senior engineer “works effectively with contractors, vendors, professional engineers, customers, OTech staff, and other stakeholders, as a technical engineering consultant.” The incumbent will recommend new network automation and orchestration strategies and tools; changes to existing strategies and tools; encourage shared use of facilities among state agencies to achieve greater economy and efficiency; eliminate obsolescence; and promote availability and access to technology advances for statewide use.

The position has a monthly salary range of $9,766 to $12,223, and the recruitment will remain open until the position is filled.  

The Department of General Services is recruiting for an IT Specialist II to perform “technical and system administration, including planning, designing, developing, implementing, documenting, and maintaining innovative technical solutions in support of the department’s Maximo Cloud solution for the Facility Management Division and other related Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) and Software as a Service (SaaS) applications.”

The job listing for the position notes that it has a monthly salary range of $7,014 to $9,399, and the application deadline is Tuesday.    

The California Public Utilities Commission is recruiting for an IT Specialist I to work “independently as a technical specialist on the maintenance of the most complex software systems and software projects,” according to the job posting.

“In addition, this position has analytical and systems administration responsibility; coordinates project and systems administration work; provides systems administration, storage administration, and VMware administration and assures the CPUC systems are secure and available,” the posting says. “Provide subject matter expertise support on Windows, VMware, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and storage subsystems which together are referred to as infrastructure systems in this duty statement.”

Among the desirable qualifications for the position are:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS).
  • Experience with Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) 2.0.
  • Detailed knowledge of Windows Server operating systems and tools.
  • Basic conceptual knowledge of SCM (software configuration management).
  • Experience working in a virtualized environment (e.g., VMware).
  • Demonstrated experience with Linux System Admin in RedHat Enterprise Linux or similar Linux OS including configuring, hardening, and scripting.
  • Experience in cybersecurity log review and incident response.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of patch management and vulnerability management. 
The position has a monthly salary range of $5,297 to $8,570, and the application deadline is Dec. 13.
