There’s a lot of detail packed into California’s new $202 billion state budget, which of course covers more than 100 departments, agencies, board, commissions and entities.

This year’s budget is about 6 percent smaller than last year’s budget — and it “anticipates a reduction of operations” of about 5 percent over the next few years, Joe Morris, e.Republic* vice president of Research, said July 22 during a Techwire Industry Briefing on the “2020 California State Budget Review.” But the economic crisis brought on by COVID-19 hasn’t dampened the state’s appetite for technology, as Techwire has found.

This slide, from the briefing, reveals exactly how much in state funds each state agency receives as part of that $202 billion. Wondering where some of California’s heavy hitters in technology and innovation reside? The California Department of Technology’s budget is part of Government Operations; the departments of Public Health, Child Support Services and Social Services are part of Health and Human Services; the Financial Information System for California and the Department of Food and Agriculture are part of General Government; and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, the California Secretary of State’s Office and the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development are part of Legislative, Judicial and Executive. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is under Natural Resources; and the departments of Transportation and Motor Vehicles are found in Transportation.
