CalPERS Joins MFA Security Movement

The California Public Employees Retirement System has joined the ranks of entities requiring multi-factor authentication.

The California Public Employees Retirement System has joined the ranks of entities requiring multi-factor authentication (MFA).

The MFA project systems “will provide an additional layer of validation” across the department’s systems. The new project was announced as complete in September in the Chief Information Officer’s Report after two years of work.

The system requires a password and phone call or text or similar other means of verification before allowing someone access to the system.

This will reduce the risk that unauthorized users can access CalPERS information and assets, bring CalPERS more in line with the latest industry standards, and develop an architecture that can build out with future MFA upgrades.

The system build-out came in almost $250,000 under budget. The total expenditure was $310,411.

The project accomplishments included an internal survey of all types of access to CalPERS services and systems.

A privileged-access management solution to allow administrative elevation and remote access was also created.
