With Caltrans looking at billions of dollars in state revenue in the coming decade, the transportation department is hiring — and that includes IT.

The department’s website has a page dedicated to recruiting and hiring, including information about which positions are open and when career fairs are planned up and down the state.

The list of open positions as of today includes Assistant Information System Analyst; Associate IT Analyst (Specialist); Programmer Analyst (Series); Staff/Senior IT Analyst; Systems Software Specialists I, II and III; and Date Processing Manager I and II.

The hiring will flow in part from the coming infusion of funds for transportation projects in general as a result of the increased state gas tax. In addition to IT jobs, Caltrans is also hiring in engineering, maintenance, accounting, surveying, planning and human resources.

Caltrans’ site links to an explanation of state employees’ salary and benefits program as well as a schedule of planned job fairs — some of which are taking place this week.

Much of the money fueling the agency’s hiring stems from the state’s gas tax revenues. How that money will be spent is explained on a state website that explains the tax-creation legislation, SB1, which calls for $5.4 billion in spending annually over the next decade to fix California’s transportation system. “It will address a backlog of repairs and upgrades, while ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable travel network for the future,” the site says.
