The California Department of Technology (CDT) recently graduated its third cohort of the Project Management Leadership Academy (PMLA). In all, there were 11 students from nine departments in state government: Department of Child Support Services, Correctional Health Care Services, Air Resources Board, Department of Industrial Relations, Department of Transportation, Department of Corrections, Franchise Tax Board, Office of Legislative Data, and Department of Veterans Affairs.

The PMLA is a 10-week program for public sector IT professionals. The academy focuses on developing essential project management capabilities and leadership skills through formal classroom instruction and an internship assignment with a host department.

During the first five weeks of the program, students participate in formal classroom training. Courses are taught by partners from the public and private sectors — for instance,  UC Davis Extension, Deloitte, and Sacramento State University — and subject matter experts in project management. Upon completion of formal coursework, students report to their internship departments for the remaining five weeks in the program.

“Each student is thoughtfully paired with a mentor who possesses significant experience in project management,” according to CDT’s Office of Professional Development. “Mentors for the PMLA are carefully selected based on their experience in project management, current project effort, and interest in giving back to the project management community.”

During the academy, students work on various project efforts selected by their mentors during their internship. This framework allows students to be more fully immersed in a project effort and to exercise the concepts learned during the formal training component.

The cohort for this particular class is featured in a video on YouTube.

CDT offers a variety of leadership academies in different disciplines.
