Check Point Software Technologies has named Rick Weaver the new security engineering manager for state, local and education in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. During the past five years, he had served as security engineer and then professional services area manager for the firm, which focuses on network cybersecurity.

Before joining Check Point, Weaver worked in Ventura County government IT for almost 14 years, serving first as NT analyst and then security architect and acting chief information security officer. His experience includes information and technology security, VPNs, disaster recovery and virtualization. He is a graduate of the University of LaVerne, and his professional designations include Certified Cyber Security Accountant (CCSA) and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).

“In a way, I’m going back to my original roots,” Weaver told Techwire. “I started as an SE (software engineer) with Check Point, so it feels like I’m coming back home. … I’m now managing the team that I was part of. It gives me a sense of accomplishment: I stuck it out and stayed with a vendor, and I’ve grown professionally and personally.”

Weaver will be managing a team of nine. He noted that Check Point’s West region is the only region with a dedicated SLED team.

“We’re doing something right,” he said, adding, “The Southern California market is very competitive from a vendor standpoint.”

Weaver will continue living and working in Ventura County. He can be reached at rweaver@checkpoint.com.
