The new director of the state’s Office of Digital Innovation, Udaya Patnaik, was welcomed to his new role Monday on Twitter by a couple of his new colleagues in state government. Patnaik’s department, which comes under the state Government Operations Agency (GovOps), is charged with innovating and using digital technology to address many of California’s government challenges.

Udaya was sworn in via online video, since many state government offices remain closed during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“Welcome to the @CAGovOps family @UdayaPatnaik!,” tweeted Angelica “Angie” Quirarte, GovOps’ assistant secretary for digital engagement. “Nothing like a virtual swearing in to kick off your journey as Director of the Office of Digital Innovation. Let’s do this!”

The state’s new chief data officer, Joy Bonaguro, chimed in with her own welcoming tweet: “Amidst all that is happening … a moment to celebrate. Welcome to @CAGovOps and team California. Excited to bring your warmth and energy to the challenge and opportunity of governing in our time.”
