Counties Recruiting for GIS Manager, Senior IT Analyst

The application deadlines for both positions fall within the first two weeks of December.

Two senior positions are open with county governments in California — one for a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) manager, and one for a senior IT analyst.

Los Angeles County is recruiting for a GIS Manager I to “manage a section responsible for developing and maintaining geospatial data layers and databases and providing GIS products and services to meet departmental operational requirements and customer needs,” the job posting says. The GIS manager will also serve as a technical resource for department managers on the uses of GIS for enhanced business efficiencies. The duties of the position include:

  • Performs spatial analyses such as buffering, spatial overlays and distance calculations using established methods and procedures.
  • Writes reports and prepares custom maps and other GIS products.
  • Plans, organizes, supervises, manages and evaluates the work of the assigned section; with staff, develops, implements and monitors work plans to achieve goals and objectives and to ensure adherence to standards.
  • Contributes to the development of the division/section budget and monitors expenditures against budget.
  • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of departmental goals and objectives.

Placer County is recruiting for a senior IT analyst to work as a software developer in the Assessor’s Office, developing and maintaining in-house software and managing and configuring servers, hardware and databases.

“This is the lead/advanced journey-level class in the Information Technology Analyst job family,” the job posting says. Job duties include the following:

  • Serves as a technical expert within area of assignment, providing guidance and direction to other professional staff and resolving complex problems; participates in developing strategic plans for systems/applications development and modification within area of expertise.
  • Analyzes and evaluates computer network design (including the county’s overall network), operating systems and/or business requirements; consults with personnel from various departments and identifies areas for strategic network, database, and/or operating system improvements and upgrades; or the development of technical solutions to automate and/or improve business processes. Designs system architecture, network infrastructure and configuration, database, and/or Web-based application solutions that meet the needs of the organization and develops plans to initiate improvements.
  • Prepares complex reports, correspondence and other documents; participates on committees and task forces; attends meetings, conferences and training sessions.
  • Answers questions and provides information to personnel of customer departments; analyzes questions and recommends appropriate corrective action as necessary.
  • Coordinates with systems, network and/or database administrators to implement application or system design specifications and coordinate integration across multiple platforms and technologies; maintains effective communications with users regarding vendor activities, problems, status, timelines and other details.
The position is in the Auburn area, where the county government is based. It has an annual salary range of $93,350 to $116,584, and the application deadline is Dec. 13.
