The state's Child Welfare Digital Services project has completed its second release of tools that are a key part its CWS-CARES system, which is designed to replace the legacy system.

Snapshot 1.2, Facility Search 1.0 and Cognito 1.0 have been rolled out to 22 Core County social workers from across California, the project announced Friday afternoon. CWDS routinely works with the counties because casework is generally handled at that level.

CARES stands for California Automated Response and Engagement System.

"This is the second release of CWS-CARES functionality since early May, and another important step towards developing the new system to replace the CWS/CMS child welfare system," says a statement from CWDS, which is part of the Office of Systems Integration under the California Health and Human Services Agency.

"Snapshot gives staff the ability to search for people across CWS/CMS from a single field, see each person’s current contact information and demographics, and view an at-a-glance summary of their CWS history," the news release says.

"Snapshot 1.2 includes enhancements, fixes and new features to existing Snapshot 1.1 functionality. Some of these include: referral and case numbering, relationship type next to parent’s name, and single digit searches for date of birth."

Facility Profile Search enables easy access to information about a facility or care home on one screen, saving time and increasing efficiency for careworkers and others working in the system.

It also allows users to search for information filtered for "county, facility type, facility ID, facility name or facility address or any combination of these fields," according to the release.

Cognito is a new identity management system that will allow staff to log in to CWS-CARES securely and access applications and view information in CWS-CARES.

CWDS Digital Teams conduct monthly public sprint reviews, with their progress published online.
