Friday is the application deadline for the next class of the California Department of Technology's (CDT) Project Management Leadership Academy (PMLA), a 10-week career-development curriculum that’s presented in partnership with other government departments and the private sector.

The program is intended for those working in the public sector.

“While it is helpful to possess some background in project management, candidates need not be highly experienced to be selected,” CDT’s notice says. “Project managers with limited experience or project support personnel who aspire to lead projects for the State of California are encouraged to apply.”

Applicants must have the approval of their department's chief information officer; details on where to find the necessary forms are available on the PMLA site.

Students will receive formal classroom training three or four days a week for the first five weeks, and will work in their home departments when not in the classroom.

“Starting in Week 6, and up to graduation, students will participate in an internship with a receiving department full time, where they will gain experience on an active, reportable project under the guidance of a mentor,” says the PMLA notice.

Participants must submit an Executive Authorization Form signed by the chief information officer of their agency or department. Applications will be accepted until 4 p.m. Friday. PMLA is one of four academies the CDT runs, the others being the flagship IT Leadership Academy and the Information Security Leadership Academy and the Digital Services Innovation Academy. The academies come under CDT's Office of Professional Development (OPD).
