DMV Recruiting for Project Director for REAL ID

The position is a Career Executive Assignment, with the project director being the agency’s point of contact with the Governor’s Office as well as other state and federal agencies.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles is recruiting for a project director (Career Executive Assignment) for REAL ID, the federally required document for those seeking to fly or enter certain federal facilities after Oct. 1.

The project director, working under DMV Director Steve Gordon, is responsible for the overall management of DMV’s REAL ID organization, which includes all aspects of policy, program and project development, as well as program and project management, to meet federal requirements for the REAL ID program. The director will also serve as the point of contact for REAL ID for the Governor’s Office and Department of Homeland Security and provide management oversight and direction, according to the job posting.

The REAL ID deadline was initially last October, but it was extended by the federal government due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The DMV’s REAL ID project director position is an influential one, with the director having “close, frequent and regular contact with the DMV Directorate, DMV management, DMV staff, the Governor’s Office, the Legislature, the California State Transportation Agency, top administrators of other state departments, control agencies, and other federal, state, and, local agencies,” the job’s duty statement notes.

The position has a monthly salary range of $10,360 to $12,341, and the application deadline is March 2.
