Fuel Sales Reporting Moves Online for California Gas Stations

There are approximately 10,000 gas stations in California, according to the Energy Commission.

Owners of retail gas stations across the state can now electronically file annual fuel sales reports to the California Energy Commission.

Beginning Jan. 1, a Web-based version of the Retail Fuel Outlet Annual Report (CEC-A15) can be filled out and submitted online. The survey measures volumes sold by fuel type. The form is a requirement for all retail outlets selling transportation fuels in the state.

According to 2012 data from the Energy Commission, there were more than 7,700 fuel stations selling gasoline and more than 3,800 selling diesel. About 800 sold propane. Total gasoline retail sales totaled 14.49 billion gallons in 2012.

"The new Web-based reporting system provides instant feedback to retailers, ensuring they are entering the data points correctly, automatically fills address information and eliminates the need for follow-up phone calls that can be time consuming," the Energy Commission posted on its blog.

The Energy Commission wants the Web-based reporting to become the preferred submission method, although gas station owners also may submit paper forms by fax or mail.
