IT Job Openings Abound in State Government

A spate of executive and senior-level IT positions have opened up recently in California state and local government. These roles include architect, developer and project director.

A spate of executive and senior-level IT positions have opened up recently in state government. These openings are typically driven by the Legislature’s approval of the governor’s proposed budget, the beginning of the state fiscal year, and normal turnover.

Following are among the positions posted recently on CalCareers and elsewhere:

  • The California Department of Motor Vehicles is seeking a chief information security officer (CISO) for its Information Systems Division. The position is classified as a Career Executive Assignment (CEA) B, with a monthly salary range of $10,010 to $11,924. The application deadline is July 3.   • The state Office of Systems Integration (OSI) is recruiting to fill two positions:
A project director, with a job classification of IT Manager 2, will serve as the primary contact for communications among the team, executive management, and all internal and external stakeholders and control agencies. The position has a monthly salary range of $8,949 and $10,877, and the applications will be accepted until the position is filled. More information and an application link can be found here.  

OSI is also seeking a lead technical analyst, classified as an IT Specialist 2 position, who would work under the chief technology officer and whose responsibilities would include supporting management in enterprise strategy, policy, adoption, architecture and maintenance of enterprise solutions.   • The state Department of Justice is seeking to fill two IT specialist 2 positions:
One is in the Cybersecurity Branch of the Network Information Security Unit, which requires expertise in information security review, audit and consultation. This person would participate in incident response activities as a member of the IT security incident response team and would be a primary member of the department’s Security Operation Center (SOC), working with security detection, analysis and response. The second position calls for someone who can “perform at a master level” in the department’s most complex Storage Area Network (SAN), supporting enterprise IT systems, hardware and software, and confidential and sensitive department data.   • Covered California is recruiting for a workstation management team lead, a job classification of IT specialist 2, to oversee workstation engineering, security and support. The duties include access to systems containing protected enrollee information, including federal tax information, protected health information and personally identifying information, and background checks are required. The monthly salary range is $6,777 to $9,081, and the deadline to apply is Friday.
  • The state Department of Public Health is recruiting for a lead application developer, an IT Specialist 2 position with a monthly salary range of $6,777 to $9,081. This position is based in Contra Costa County. The developer would advise management in enterprise strategy, policy, adoption, architecture and maintenance of complex IT solutions, among other responsibilities.   • The Department of Consumer Affairs is seeking a developer, IT Specialist 2, to work in the Office of Information Services (OIS), supporting 39 clients who license and regulate various industries within the state of California. The OIS performs the work to configure, test, and implement the enterprise-wide online licensing and enforcement system.  The position is classified as IT specialist 2, with a monthly salary range of $6,777 to $9,081.   • The California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) is seeking a senior software engineer, IT Specialist 2, to work in the Contributions Unit and to support the myCalPERS (MCP) system. The engineer will be responsible for the integrity, maintainability and overall functionality support of the MCP system, working closely with solution architects, business analysts, developers and testers.   • The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is seeking an enterprise architect, IT Specialist 2, to work independently “as the highest-level technical specialist,” who’s responsible for bringing innovation and creativity to improve ABC’s IT infrastructure. The enterprise architect is “responsible for developing the department’s IT future state architecture and contributes to the proper selection of technologies by providing information on advanced and appropriate technology, systems analysis and software acquisition,” the job listing says. In addition, the architect “ensures that the respective business, application, data and technology perspectives are in line with the organization’s technology and governance strategies, policies and standards.” The monthly salary range is $6,777 to $9,081, and the application deadline is July 3.   • The Department of Insurance is recruiting for a software systems architect/developer (team lead), an IT Specialist 2 classification, to serve “as the Microsoft Technologies (Microsoft Dynamics CRM) technical lead and senior developer for the application development activities and supporting processes of the California Department of Insurance (CDI) within the Microsoft Technologies scope,” says the job posting. “Development activities will include CRM/ADX/.Net development, creation of custom components, SharePoint integration, MS Office customization and integration based on business requirements, and customize and extend the Microsoft Dynamics CRM software package to meet the needs of the customers.” The monthly salary range is $6,777 to $9,081, and the application link can be found here.
