Large Department Recruiting for Deputy Director Role

The deputy director will oversee the management, operations, enhancement and continuous system improvements of the department’s technology systems. The application deadline is Monday.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is recruiting for a deputy director (Career Executive Assignment) to provide “direct and indirect supervision for all IT staff throughout CDCR” and to be responsible for the management, operations, enhancement and continuous system improvements of the department’s technology systems.

According to the job posting, the key functions of the position, which is in CDCR’s Division of Enterprise Information Services (EIS), include:
  • Responsible for the formulation, implementation and evaluation of departmental policies and programs relating to enterprise technology operations. (35 percent)
  • Oversee the operations and production support for the largest, most critical systems and the infrastructure they run on. EIS oversees over 90 applications in support of CDCR’s mission, some of which are linked to other state, county and local systems. (35 percent)
  • Maintain executive management responsibility for planning, coordinating, directing and overseeing the operations of services within EIS, and work collaboratively with stakeholders to improve technology-based services within CDCR as well as statewide. (30 percent)

Desirable qualifications for the position, according to the duty statement, include:
  • Experience in managing a comprehensive IT program focused on IT field operations and infrastructure services, including 24/7/365 support, desktop support and telecommunications services such as data/voice systems, PBX radio systems and smartphones.
  • Experience in managing critical IT system development projects linked to state, county and local systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, develop and manage IT resources including making recommendations on a departmental, inter-departmental and cross-jurisdictional level.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively make major policy-influencing decisions that contribute to the development of IT strategies within a large department.
  • Strong leadership skills and proven ability to plan, organize and direct a multi-disciplinary staff in a complex environment with competing priorities and demands.
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in establishing business partnerships; able to communicate effectively orally and in writing with departmental executive staff, legislators, control agencies and stakeholders.

The deputy director position has a monthly salary range of $12,028 to $13,657, and the application deadline is Monday.
