The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is putting together an eligibility list of candidates interested in one of multiple assistant director positions in the IT field that are either open or anticipated. The deadline for applicants to be included in the current pool is March 14.

Chief Information Officer Louis Carr noted that there is one solicitation to establish a list of eligible candidates, and that list is valid for two years. All 42 city departments will use that list in hiring for assistant director positions. Those applicants who apply by the March 14 deadline will be considered.

Carr said he's seeking to hire two assistant directors, and his peers are also contemplating multiple hires.

"We have separate recruitments for each individual position, but we have one solicitation to establish a list of eligible candidates," Carr explained. "Through this selection process, multiple positions may be filled. One position would oversee the networking, server/storage and service desk. The ideal candidate will have previous experience as a network engineer or a server/storage administrator.

"One position would be over the enterprise architect team. The ideal candidate should have past experience as an EA and have his/her TOGAF certification (or similar).

"One position would be over the database administrators, middleware system (like Websphere, IIS, Exchange, etc.), document management systems, GIS, ITSM and data governance. The ideal candidate would have hand-on experience in more than one of these technology areas."

Among the IT positions for which LADWP is accepting applications is that of assistant director of information systems, which calls for a minimum of two to five years as a manager or director of IT with a large staff and budget.

LADWP is the nation’s largest municipal utility, serving 1.2 million power customers and 800,000 water customers, and has nearly 10,000 employees and about $5 billion in annual revenue. Carr was the subject of a Techwire Virtual Briefing in October 2017 in which he discussed his agency and its future initiatives.

More details on these and other positions, including prerequisites and other applicant requirements, are available online.
