The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has a new CIO.

Bryan Sastokas will start at his new position, which oversees transportation of 1.3 million passengers daily on more than 2,000 buses and six rail lines, on April 9.

The Metro agency was created in 1993 to oversee building and transportation planning for Los Angeles County, one of the most populous in the nation, with more than 9 million people living there. The Metro is also Los Angeles' third attempt at a rail transit system since the late 19th century, using much of the previous system's footprint.

Sastokas will head the agency’s IT unit of 147 full-time staff with a $65.2 million budget.

He was previously the chief information officer and director of technology and innovation for Long Beach, which earned an award from the Center for Digital Government for solving social challenges with technology. Sastokas has also been CIO in Oakland, Modesto and Coral Springs, Fla.

“Bryan brings a decade of experience in the public sector with work that has been recognized with a Malcolm Baldrige Award and the Center of Digital Government Award, among others,” said Metro CEO Phillip A. Washington, as quoted in a news release from the agency. “He brings a demonstrated track record of harnessing innovation while building and deploying products, services and infrastructure that support our business needs. He is a perfect fit for Metro.”

Sastokas was also named one of Government Technology’s Top 25 Doers, Dreamers and Drivers in 2015 for his work in Oakland.
