Natural Resources Agency Will Move, Leave Data Center Behind

The Resources Building made news in 2015 when the Department of General Services called it one of the three worst state buildings in the capital region. It’s making news again as the Natural Resources Agency works to move into a zero-energy building.

The agency is working with the Department of General Services to construct and move into a new building that will not include its data center. Locating the data center somewhere else will save energy, according to Monica Hassan, deputy director of public affairs for the Department of General Services.

“DGS made the determination not to include the data center in the project scope for the move because it would increase construction costs and would create a large use of energy within the building,” Hassan told Techwire.

Whether the data center will stay in its current location, 1416 9th St., or move somewhere else is still being decided. The building also houses the state departments of Water Resources, and Parks and Recreation.

“Details of the exact location of where the data center will be housed are currently being worked out,” Sam Chiu, communications director of the California Natural Resources Agency, told Techwire.
