Office of Emergency Services Leans on GIS for Fire Awareness

The GIS-based map can be toggled to include views of individual fires, weather conditions and shelter locations. The map breaks down the amount of acres burned, personnel involved and engines on-site.

The California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) is providing daily updates to its fire awareness map.

The GIS-based map can be toggled to include views of individual fires, weather conditions and shelter locations. The map breaks down the amount of acres burned, personnel involved and engines on-site.

The map also incorporates the Santa Ana Wildfire Threat Index and social media from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service.

CalOES is responsible for responding to emergencies across California, either providing information, infrastructure support, labor resources or recovery resources.

"Cal OES GIS is tasked with providing GIS support to incident response & recovery operations and daily operations. Develop map, app, and mobile products to enhance situation awareness and support decision-making during emergency management operations," CalOES's site reads.
