Opportunity Alert: More Laptops, Hot Spots for Schools?

Everything including IT projects may be "on the table" in the next state budget, but devices such as laptops and Internet hot spots to help California students doing "distance learning" could be an exception to that developing rule.

As tipped April 1 by Gov. Gavin Newsom, California continues its quest to close the digital divide and help millions of homebound students around the state learn by providing them with the Internet access and devices to make that happen during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The state announced a partnership April 1 with Google to donate 100,000 mobile hot spots and 4,000 Chromebooks. But, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday, “That’s not enough and there are gaps still.”

California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond has submitted a specific budget request to Newsom’s office, though it's unclear what is in that request. But it sounds as if the state may continue to acquire the assets students will need for distance learning during the pandemic.
