The Public Utilities Commission is upgrading its Chief Information Officer position to an executive level.

The director made the decision to elevate the position to the level of Career Executive Assignment (CEA), according to a Techwire interview with Reza Yazdi, the CIO at PUC now.

"The CPUC regulates services and utilities, protects consumers, safeguards the environment, and assures Californians' access to safe and reliable utility infrastructure and services. The essential services regulated include electric, natural gas, telecommunications, water, railroad, rail transit, and passenger transportation companies," the PUC website reads.

Yazdi, who has been the PUC CIO for three years, brought more than 20 years of IT experience to the position.

Before his work at the PUC, Yazdi served as a network and security manager for California Highway Patrol and for 15 years as an IT manager for the California Department of Public Health.

Yazdi has applied for the elevated position but has expressed his desire to stay in state service, even if he is not rehired to the PUC.
