Red Hat has named Justin Lee, a veteran of the public and private sectors, the new account executive for California state government.

Lee will be focused on the Health and Human Services Agency, the California Department of Technology, the State Compensation Insurance Fund, the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Legislative Data Center, the Franchise Tax Board, the Employment Development Department and others. He will split responsibility for the state with Mike Jaeger.

Paul Maunder, Red Hat’s sales director for State, Local, Education and Healthcare for the company’s Central and West regions, said Lee is a public-sector expert, having spent his entire career working for and with government and higher-education institutions across the nation.

Before joining Red Hat, Lee was most recently the senior analytics account executive for SAP, working with the public sector in a data-driven and analytical approach. Previously, Lee was sales director for Streetline Inc., an Internet of Things innovator. He also spent four years with IBM as the client executive for Northern California Local Government and Higher Education, where he was responsible for developing the overall business relationship between local governments and IBM.

Lee started in the public sector, having spent over a decade in various roles in government administration. From 2006 to 2013, he was business development manager for the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), where he served as the lead negotiator for over 170 incentive packages. He also previously served as managing director of purchasing and procurement for DCEO. He began his career in public sector working for a former governor of Illinois as special assistant to the director of Intergovernmental Affairs.

Lee holds a master’s in business administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, with concentrations in Marketing, Management & Strategy, and International Business. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, majoring in Economics.
