The city announced City Manager Jennifer Maguire’s appointment of Tawfik in an emailed release today. Tawfik is set to take over the CIO position April 18, replacing Rob Lloyd, who was promoted to deputy city manager in December. Lloyd has maintained CIO duties since his promotion.

Tawfik has roughly 25 years of IT experience in both the public and private sectors and has served as CIO for Irvine since 2016. Tawfik’s accomplishments during this stint include improvements in city services and business operations as well as the implementation of multiple enterprise business systems, according to the press release.

Before his stint with Irvine, he worked with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, where he served in various roles, including CIO. The release indicates he provided oversight for the network and data needs of 70 field offices.

Tawfik said in the release that he’s dedicated to delivering “exceptional and equitable civic services.”

“Technology is key to the city’s development and growth, and I’m committed to utilizing effective tools to engage our communities and business, enhance our services, and make San José more responsive and resilient,” Tawfik said.
