State Departments Recruiting for IT Positions

The positions will have a combination of managerial and "support specialist" duties, and the successful candidates may have to work on the fly to quickly and effectively solve problems and lead staff.

Two state agencies, one with an emphasis on technology, are seeking to fill IT positions with some sense of urgency.

The California Department of Technology (CDT) is seeking to hire a Network Applications Engineer — an IT Specialist II position at a compensation rate that appears to be among the most highly paid of such classifications. The application deadline closes Friday. The candidate will take direction from the IT Manager of Network Applications Support, but will be responsible for “innovative problem solving where guidance is not readily available.” He or she will act as a “master level technical software support specialist,” supporting network and print elements of a “zSystem and client/server computing environment.”

The new hire will be also be expected to “quickly, efficiently, and effectively troubleshoot and resolve” complicated customer problems and “proactively identify” potential future issues — as well as creating and maintaining project plans in support of CDT’s Strategic and Tactical Plans. The position will include independent work as well as tasks as a team leader or member, including software support services; installation of vendor and third-party software; and the design, configuration and operational support of SNA, VTAM, IP communications and protocols including IP security in Communication Server services.

Minimum qualifications include one year as an IT Specialist I; or five years of IT experience including one year in a lead or expert capacity — with the possibility of a college degree substituting for a portion of that experience. Salary range is $7,014 to $9,399 per month.

Elsewhere across the enterprise, tech jobs at the California Department of Aging include an Information Technology Manager I position — the most highly paid of several IT posts for which it is accepting exams. The position isn’t currently open; however, it’s described as a managerial position in which the candidate would have “significant responsibilities for formulating or administering organizational information technology policies and programs” and for “planning, organizing and directing” the tasks of one or more IT programs or units, as well as managing the work of lower-level IT staff.

“Incumbents at a small or medium department may serve as the department’s Chief Information Officer,” the position description indicates. Minimum qualifications include two years experience as an IT Supervisor, or one year experience as an IT Supervisor II, or six years IT experience in “progressively responsible technical, analytical, or supervisory tasks for computer systems,” with at least two of those years including “highly specialized work in a lead capacity on highly complex or specialized” IT systems or services. Here again, a college degree might replace part of the required experience. Salary range is $7,376 to $9,884 per month.
