State Health Agency Recruiting for CIO/Deputy Director

The position is a Career Executive Assignment, with a monthly salary range of $10,360 to $12,341. The application deadline is Feb. 13.

A large state agency is recruiting for a new Deputy Director, who will also serve as the Chief Information Officer.

The Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) is recruiting for a successor to CIO Scott Christman, who left the department last month after more than five years in that role.

“As a member of the executive leadership team,” the job description says, “the Deputy Director/Chief Information Officer has executive leadership responsibility for the planning, development, implementation, administration, and assessment of the Department’s policies, programs, and procedures related to the Information Services Division. The Deputy Director/CIO provides high-level policy design and oversight for all of OSHPD’s information technology services, data programs, and healthcare analytics. … The Deputy Director/CIO acts as the liaison to executive management, private and public sector healthcare industry representatives, the Legislature, the Governor’s Office, California Health and Human Services Agency, and state, federal, and local governmental agencies.”

Before leaving his role as CIO last month, Christman — who’s going to work for Slalom — told Techwire in an interview what’s ahead for his successor:

“We have envisioned a number of projects to improve the data life cycle across our programs and reduce technical debt. Those projects are captured in our portfolio but have had to wait as we prioritize the delivery of legislative requirements. But some of the data life cycle improvement work is slated to begin next year, including modern data warehouse and master data management initiatives.”

He added: “The planning for a new Healthcare Payments Data (HPD) program, as required by Assembly Bill 1810 (2018), will be completed in 2020. The HPD is a larger project, but we wouldn’t expect any solicitations until 2021 with all the necessary approvals in place.”

Christman noted that the OSHPD CIO/Deputy Director position “looks a bit different than other CIO posts, because we integrated health-care data and analytics programs under the division.”
