State Recruitments Abound for IT Positions

Across state government, departments' and agencies' IT job openings are especially plentiful this week. These positions include specialist and supervisory roles, as well as positions for developers and analysts.

The state is recruiting for a spate of open IT positions across several departments — significant tech jobs paying around $85,000 a year or more. 

Following are brief descriptions of each position, with salary range, application deadline and job links:  

  • The California Department of Justice is seeking an IT Specialist I to serve as lead developer utilizing the Systems Development Life Cycle on complex information technology systems that are maintained or newly implemented by the Systems Analysis Unit. “The ITS I plays a key role in working closely with program clients, developers and other department staff in the coordination of the analysis, specifications, testing, planning and implementation of enhancements and changes to mission-critical systems,” the job posting says. The position has a monthly salary range of $5,297 to $7,099, and the application deadline is Nov. 21.
  • The Employment Development Department is recruiting for an IT Specialist I to serve as a contract analyst on the department's Benefit Systems Modernization Project. “Under the direction of the BSM Project Manager, the ITS I leads procurement activities for information technology goods and services, including developing solicitations, amendments, and Non Competitive Bids,” the job posting says. “The ITS I develops and reviews deliverables required by the state’s Project Approval Lifecycle, Department of Finance, and the EDD’s internal Stage/Gate process. Examples include Special Project Reports, Budget Change Proposals, Financial Analysis Worksheets, Supplemental Budget Requests, and Post Implementation Evaluation Reports.” The monthly salary range is $5,297 to $8,570, and the application deadline is Nov. 16.
  • The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) is recruiting for an IT Specialist II to oversee “a wide array of telecommunications IP network activities and services related to the system design, analysis, security, building and maintenance of the California Public Safety Microwave Network (CAPSNET) system,” the job posting says. “This position independently develops, designs and operates the Operational Technology IP Core network for the California Microwave Public Safety Network (CAPSNET). This is a full journey-level technical position providing design, installation, upgrades and operation across system engineering and information security domain.” The monthly salary range is $7,014 to $9,399, and the recruitment will remain open until the position is filled.
  • The state Franchise Tax Board is recruiting for an IT Specialist I to work independently as a Pega developer, “performing frequently recurring well-defined tasks and is responsible for the design, programming, configuration, testing and support of IT solutions that are developed with the Pega Framework, utilizing the Pega Rules Process Commander (PRPC) platform and interfaces,” the job posting says. “They also provide consulting services to application and infrastructure areas to leverage and interface with Pega services efficiently and effectively. The developer works independently and with other technical staff to troubleshoot software problems and assist with resolution and preventative measures.” The position has a monthly salary range of $5,297 to $7,099, and the application deadline is Nov. 15.
  • The Franchise Tax Board is also recruiting an IT Specialist I to serve as a project manager, directing project resources and facilitating processes related to IT project planning, execution and control. “The incumbent will consult/assist/lead and coordinate activities in preparation of reportable or delegated IT projects,” the job posting says. “Activities include but are not limited to State Project Approval Lifecycle processes, cost/benefit analysis, funding strategies and the analysis of budgetary and resource issues.” The position has a monthly salary range of $5,297 to $8,826, and the application deadline is Nov. 15. 
  • The Peace Officers Standards and Training agency is seeking an IT Specialist I to focus on “the implementation of Web applications and a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) designed to create and deliver complex, large-scale, competency-based interactive courseware operating in an Azure cloud environment,” the job posting says. “The incumbent, applying sound software engineering principles, will help the team build Web apps and services and convert existing courseware from Adobe Flash to work within the SOA system, while ensuring the continued operation and maintenance of the system. The incumbent will work in all phases of the software life cycle and as a full stack developer.” The position has a monthly salary range of $5,297 and $8,570, and the application deadline is Nov. 15.
  • The Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) is seeking an IT Specialist II to serve as a Network Technical Specialist. The DCA’s Office of Information Services (OIS) supports 39 clients that license and regulate various industries within the state of California. The OIS performs the work to configure, test and implement the enterprise-wide online licensing and enforcement system. The position has a monthly salary range of $7,014 and $9,399, according to the job posting, and the application deadline is Nov. 19. 
  • The California High Speed Rail Authority is seeking an IT Specialist II to serve as an information security and privacy analyst. The duties, according to the job listing, include helping with the development, creation and management of an enterprise privacy, data classification and data loss prevention program to ensure compliance with state, federal, and other regulatory requirements. In addition, the analyst will develop, implement and maintain an enterprise security and privacy awareness training program, ensuring consistency with the organization’s risk management strategy and priorities, according to the job posting. The monthly salary range is $7,014 to $9,399, and the application deadline is Dec. 2. 
  • The Department of Justice is recruiting for an IT Supervisor II, who will plan, organize, direct and oversee the activities of the Enterprise Information Systems Unit, supervising and managing by “providing direction to staff in order to support a highly available and complex server environment,” the job posting says. “This environment encompasses enterprise email systems, Identity and Access Management (IAM), secure email services, mobile device management services in support of Department of Justice (DOJ) staff statewide, as well as partnering with law enforcement agencies and public safety organizations in the state.” The position has a monthly salary range of $6,917 to $9,268, and the application deadline is Nov. 20.
  • The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is recruiting for an IT Specialist I to fill the role of lead application developer for web and mobile. “The incumbent works independently or as lead of a team and is responsible for the development of system-software-solutions, IT software engineering methods of design/build, testing, as well as providing analysis, administration and support custom designed systems,” the job posting says. “Technologies used include LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP), mobile platforms (iOS and Android), and Google Map API. Expertise in other web-based technologies like C#/.NET, and Java will be considered.” The monthly salary range is $5,297 to $8,570, and the application deadline is Dec. 2.
